New for 2023 MotoGP Sprint Race Explained

30 Mar 2023 Newsletter, MotoGP Sprint Race, MotoGP 2023, LCR Honda [Sassy_Social_Share]
  • A new MotoGP Sprint Race has been introduced for the 2023 season.
  • It promises to bring excitement throughout the race weekend, rather than on Sunday only.
  • Its introduction brings the total of races to 42 this year.

Chances are, you may have noticed a new MotoGP Sprint Race on Saturday, ahead of the main Race on Sunday.

The new sprint race format is new for the class beginning 2023, following in the footsteps of the World Superbike Championship and Formula 1. It is hoped that racing fans will get more value from their tickets at the track and more viewership from home.

So let us take a closer look to how it works.

What is a MotoGP Sprint Race?

The MotoGP Sprint Race will take place at all 21 rounds of the championship this year, bringing the total number of races to 42. The qualifying format for Moto3 and Moto2 classes remain the same.

It also means some shake up in the practice formats:

Friday

  • Two timed practices sessions P1 and P2 will take place on Friday.
  • These two sessions will determine the best times for the two qualifying sessions (Q1 and Q2).
  • The 10 fastest riders will head straight into Q2.
  • The rest of the riders from 11th and down the field will need to shoot it out in Q1.

Saturday

  • The day begins with an untimed Free Practice session.
  • Followed 10 minutes later with Q1.
  • Two fastest riders in Q1 will head to Q2.
  • Q2 begins another 10 minutes later.
  • Now, the 12 riders (plus the 2 fastest from Q1) will battle it out for the top 12 starting grid positions.
  • The starting grid positions are the same for the Sprint Race and main Race on Sunday, which differs from WSBK and F1.
  • Sprint Race begins at 3pm.

Sunday

  • Free Practice 4 (FP4) has been scrapped.
  • The Race begins at 2pm.
Time Session
Friday
Practice 1 9.55am-10.40pm
Practice 2 3pm-4pm
Saturday
Free practice 10.10am-10.40am
Qualifying (Q1) 10.50am-11.05am
Qualifying (Q2) 11.15am-11.30am
Sprint race 3pm
Sunday
Grand Prix 2pm

Length of Sprint Race

The length the MotoGP Sprint Race will half of the main Race. For example, the Main Race consists of 26 laps at the Sepang International Circuit, thus the Sprint Race will see 13 laps.

Points

The Sprint Race awards falf the points of the Main Race since it is only over half the distance. As such, the points range from 12 maximum points for first placed finish, down to 1 point for 9th placing; compared to 25 maximum points for the champion down to 1 point for the 15th place in the Main Race.

However, weird as it may seem, the points accrued in the Sprint Races do not add towards the final championship standing, unlike in WSBK.

Technical rules

The allowed full fuel load for the Main Race is 22 litres, thus 12 litres (extra 1 litre) is allowed for the Sprint Race.

There is no special tyre allocation for the Sprint Race, unlike WSBK. It is up to the teams to work around the number of allowed tyres for a race weekend.

Engine rules remain the same, as FP4 has been scrapped for the Sprint Race.

Penalty rules

Penalty rules for infringement in Sprint Races are the same as used previously in practice and qualifying sessions. The penalties will carry over to the main race or being handed during the race itself.

    IMPORTANT GIVI RACKING SYSTEM INFORMATION:

In order to protect the user and avoid damage to the original structure of the motorcycle, we would like to point out the following. Our product is the result of the assembly of various components. Therefore, the welded points and bends, as well as the different motorcycle chassis can cause assembly difficulties. For the correct fitting procedure, we suggest you rely on qualified personnel and to check carefully that the kit components do not interfere negatively or contact with the original parts of the motorcycle (Frame, Silencers, Shock Absorbers, etc.). We will not be responsible for damages caused by incorrect assembling due to poor fitting by a non-qualified person or mechanic. The warranty covers exclusively the replacement or articles from the product range, which would present defects prior to final assembly.

    Suggested fitting sequence: –

    • Fit the supports and the corresponding kit screws (without tightening them) according to the sequence suggested in the mounting instruction.
    • Centre all fitting kit items and check that they do not interfere negatively or contact with the original parts of the motorcycle.
    • Tighten the screw sequentially and check their tension periodically.
    • In case the kit is not complete or you find that you have a faulty component, do not hesitate to get in touch with your dealer or directly with the producer. Please avoid using unsuitable parts.
